ONE MILE BEACH
Wanderers Retreat is a leisurely 400 metre walk from One Mile Beach, arguably one of the prettiest and best surf beaches in Australia. One Mile, patrolled during the summer months, is also a great place to fish.
One Mile is home to the Tri Port Stephens Triathlon Festival held in May and along with nearby Birubi Beach, the World Surfing’s NSW Toyota Pro held in November.
Meet with friends at the Swell Café for an ice coffee and meal or catch up in the bar and listen to music.
Port Stephens Learn to Surf provides expert coaching for the beginner as well as expert coaching for the more experienced, SUP and board hire.
The township of Anna Bay is just 3 minutes drive or a 20-minute walk from Wanderers Retreat. Anna Bay is filled with coffee shops, restaurants, tavern, takeaway food outlets, and specialty shops. A great place to visit. If you like traditional Italian pasta a must visit is the famous Pasta Di Porto.
The local shopping village is a perfect place to stop and enjoy the quiet life.
Anna Bay is situated at the entrance to the Stockton Sand Dunes and some great activities like Camel Riding, Sand Surfing and 4WD tours. Talk to us about the special deals we can provide you on some attractions.
With a beach permit you can also take your registered 4WD onto the beach from Anna Bay.
Enjoy a coffee after a swim or wine and dine at the licensed Crest Café located at surf club. Overlooking the magnificent Birubi Beach towards Newcastle, witness the longest stretch of moving sand on the east coast.
Wanderers Retreat is within 10 minutes driving distance of the iconic and beautiful coastal centre of Nelson Bay which offers boutique shopping, fine and casual dining, plus an array of takeaway food outlets.
Nelson Bay is a lovely place to visit and a convenient place to stock the pantry for your Wanderers holiday with the local supermarket, fisherman’s co-operative, butcheries and bakeries.
Nelson Bay is also the embarkation point for many of the water-based activities available to our guests while in Port Stephens. From Dolphin and Whale Watching experiences to kayaking, parasailing and deep sea diving your blue water paradise experience starts at Nelson Bay.
The Salamander Bay Shopping Centre is a large air-conditioned shopping centre with supermarkets, a tavern, bait & tackle shop, bottle shops, clothes shops and variety stores. The centre is approximately a 10-minute drive from Wanderers Retreat.
Shoal Bay is a delightful shopping experience right on the beachfront. Arguably one of the most scenic beaches on the Australian coastline. Enjoy the great takeaways, or one of the fine cafe’s or restaurants. Shop at the boutiques and enjoy everything which Shoal Bay has to offer.
Old Salamander Bay
This strip of shops leading west away from the new shopping centre and towards Soldiers Point is a great place to stop and pick up any little essentials. There are two bakeries, a butcher and pharmacy.
Just off the main road at Old Salamander Bay you will find the local oyster growers where you can buy oysters fresh, both shucked and unshucked.
At Soldiers Point you can enjoy the lovely cafe’s and restaurants. Try breakfast at the marina till 11.00am everyday except Monday. Hire a boat and explore the back part of Port Stephens in the waters around Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabulla and Tanilba Bay.
Don’t forget to experience the tranquillity of Fame Cove before returning. Soldiers Point is located approximately 20 minutes from Wanderers Retreat.
