Wanderers Retreat is within 10 minutes driving distance of the iconic and beautiful coastal township of Nelson Bay which offers boutique shopping, fine dining, casual dining, and an array of takeaway food outlets. This teamed with the local supermarkets, fisherman’s co-operative, butcheries, and bakeries make Nelson Bay a lovely place to visit and a convenient place to stock up for your stay at Wanderers Retreat.
By the way, to a lot of peoples surprise (especially when they enter it in their GPS) there is no township called Port Stephens – it is the waterway that is arguably the prettiest harbour north of Sydney and south of the Great Barrier Reef. The port is flanked by wonderful beaches of which One Mile Beach is part.
Nelson Bay is also the embarkation point for many of the water based activities available to our guests while in Port Stephens. From Dolphin and Whale Watching experiences to kayaking, parasailing and deep sea diving your blue water paradise experience starts at Nelson Bay.
The township of Anna Bay is just 3 minutes drive or a 30 minute walk from Wanderers Retreat. This sleepy coastal village is a perfect place to stop and enjoy the quiet life. With a bakery, supermarket, newsagency, doctors surgery, pharmacy, liquor shop, tavern, butcher, restaurant, takeaway food outlets, and specialty shops Anna Bay is a great place to visit.
Anna Bay is situated at the entrance to the Dunes and some great activities like Camel Riding, Sand Surfing and 4WD tours. With a beach permit you can also take your registered 4WD onto the beach from Anna Bay. The local service station can supply a beach driving permit for Stockton Beach and is a great place to stop, refuel and reinflate tyres after discovering Stockton Beach.
Enjoy a coffee and meal at the surf club while looking down towards Newcastle along the longest stretch of moving sand on the east coast.
The Salamander Bay Shopping Centre is a large air conditioned shopping centre with supermarkets, clothes shops and variety stores. The centre is approximately a 10 minute drive from Wanderers Retreat.
Shoal Bay is a delightful shopping experience right on the beachfront of arguably one of the most beautiful beaches on the New South Wales coast. Enjoy the great takeaways, or one of the fine cafe’s or restaurants. Shop at the boutiques and enjoy everything which Shoal Bay has to offer.
Old Salamander Bay
This strip of shops leading west away from the new shopping centre and towards Soldiers Point is a great place to stop and pick up any little essentials. There are two bakeries, a butcher and pharmacy. Just off the main road at Old Salamander Bay you will find the local oyster growers where you can buy oysters fresh, both shucked and unshucked.
At Soldiers Point you can enjoy the lovely cafe’s and restaurants. Try breakfast at the marina til 11.00am everyday except Monday. Hire a boat and explore the back part of Port stephens in the waters around Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabulla and Tanilba Bay. Don’t forget to experience the tranquility of Fame Cove before returning. Soldiers Point is located approximately 20 minutes from Wanderers Retreat.
Salamander Bay Industrial
Within the industrial area of Salamander Bay you will find mechanical assistance, camping and outdoor goods as well as fresh produce and boutique gifts.
At the Taylors Beach Business Park you will find a host of businesses from furniture and mechanical to pet supplies and much more.
While there are many beaches in the Port Stephens region we are highlighting ones which many of the guests of Wanderers Retreat have commented on in the past and some of our own personal favorites. All of the beaches listed are within a 30 minute drive from Wanderers Retreat with some as close as a 3 minute walk!
